Flying to Salt Lake City With Skis: A Traveler's Guide

Salt Lake City International (SLC) is the closest major airport to world-class skiing in North America — you can land and be on the lift in about an hour. That makes it one of the easiest ski trips to fly for.

Getting your gear off the plane

Ski and snowboard bags are delivered to the oversized-baggage area at SLC. A wheeled bag rolls easily to the rental-car center and shuttle pickups.

From SLC to the resorts

  • Cottonwood Canyons (Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude) — ~40 min–1 hr
  • Park City & Deer Valley — ~40 min

Rent a car (AWD recommended — the Cottonwood Canyons sometimes require chains or 4WD), grab a canyon shuttle, or use a resort transfer. Either way you'll be handling your bag a lot, so wheels and a padded shell make it painless.

Bring your own setup

With resorts this close, many travelers fly in for a long weekend with their own skis. Flying with your gear keeps you on the equipment you know, and one checked ski bag often costs less than a weekend of rentals. Protect it in transit with a padded SHAKA travel bag.
